More than 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students have received journalism degrees from the University of Maryland since today’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism was founded as a department in 1945. Today, College alumni are leaders in newspapers, magazines, and TV and radio news organizations around the country and the world
In the sports world, Maryland alums are in the newsrooms of ESPN, CBS Sports, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer and many more TV networks, radio stations and newspaper ledgers throughout the country.
Alumni are often invited back to campus to talk and network with current students. One such panel was Maryland Day 2011. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Bob Ford, ESPN’S Tim Kurkijan, Major League Soccer’s Will Kuhns, NFL Players Association’s Amanda Shank, the Philadelphia Daily News’ John Smallwood, author Dave Ungrady and Comcast SportsNet’s Christy Winters-Scott.
