Philip Merrill College of Journalism students that are interested in pursuing sports journalism have found many jobs and internships both locally and nationally in their field.
Using the skills they learn at the school and the connections they make with the faculty, staff and alums afford the students with a number of opportunities.
Students are encouraged to seek out multiple internship opportunities during their undergraduate experience for academic credit, as part-time paying jobs or as a combination of these experiences. Within the Philip Merrill College curriculum, students may apply a maximum of three journalism internship credits toward their degrees.
In the Washington-Maryland area, some of the opportunities for sports media that students have taken advantage of include: The Washington Post, Sirius XM Radio, Comcast SportsNet, the Baltimore Sun, USA Today, Inside Lacrosse, WTEM-ESPN980, Prince George’s Sentinel, NBC4 Sports, Washington Times, NFL Player’s Association and many more.
Undergraduate students, graduate students and alums also fill the offices of the Washington Redskins, Washington Wizards and Monarchs, Washington Capitals, Washington Nationals, D.C. United, Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles and the University of Maryland athletic department.
Information about internships and job opportunities is posted regularly on Twitter, @merrillworx or at @povichcenter and on student listserv blasts.
