Joe Yasharoff, UMD ’87, is a 30-year veteran in sports television and the former Managing Editor at Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic and Executive Sports Producer at WTTG (Fox5). He has won 12 Emmy awards and was inducted into the NATAS Silver Circle in 2014.
He teaches JOUR368Y: Topics in Broadcast and Electronic Media; Sports Producing: This class will introduce students to the practices of producing sportscasts and sports shows for television: from strategies on how to construct a rundown to the timing of a show to the final execution of the show when the lights are on and the cameras are rolling. Students will learn how to choose a lead story, what works and does not work for TV, how to effectively “tease” stories and how to write specifically for the medium of television. This course should help prepare students to work on campus for the BigTen2GO Network, as well as careers in sports television.
